MINNEAPOLIS - July 18, 2018 - PRLog -- Hopkins Carpet One wants homeowners to know their flooring may need special care and treatment during the hot, summer months. Increased activity, sunlight and humidity can all have adverse effects on flooring. Hopkins Carpet One provides some tips to keep floors in good shape during this season.

Summertime often means more activity around the home. Kids are out of school and are often running in and out of the house. All this extra movement brings more dirt and debris inside that gets on floors. One way to cut down on the amount of dirt and grit on floor is to put door mats inside all doors. The door mats can catch the majority of particles that can end up scratching hard surface floors or soiling carpet.

Apart from adding door mats, regular vacuuming is a must. Whether it's carpet or hard surface flooring, homeowners should vacuum at least once weekly to remove dust particles and fine grit like sand. This will protect the floors from scratches and keep dirt from getting farther down into carpet. One thing to keep in mind, a vacuum with a beater bar should only be used on carpet. A bare floor attachment should be used for all other floors.

Summer means sun, which can be damaging to floors. Homeowners should use blinds or curtains to keep floors from being exposed to direct sunlight. Too much sunlight can cause fading or discoloration of flooring. Blinds and curtains don't need to remain closed all day, just when the sun is directly shining on the floors. Reducing the amount of sunlight shining inside will also keep the house cooler, thus saving on air conditioning costs.

In many areas, summer also brings an increase in humidity. High humidity levels can affect flooring in adverse ways. This is especially true for hardwood floors, which tend to expand when humidity levels are high. To prevent warping or cupping of floors, the humidity level in the house should be maintained between 35-55 percent. Installing a de-humidifier can help maintain the proper level. Running the air conditioner can also help.

These are just a few ways for homeowners to keep their floors looking great all summer long. By following these tips, floors will also last longer.
