New Releases:

Auschwitz-Birkenau: From Hell to Hope?
and Tribalism and Prejudice: The Far-Right and Lessons From History.

Waterside Productions are pleased to announce the release of these two books by Simon Bell, a new author from England. Both books available on Amazon as print on demand or e-book.

Auschwitz-Birkenau: From Hell to Hope?is a non-academic book aimed primarily at those who are new to the subject of the Holocaust. It is written in part from the personal perspective of the author based on several visits to sites of the Nazi genocide in Poland (including the seventieth anniversary event commemorating the liberation of Auschwitz), meeting with survivors of the Holocaust, and friendship with the grandson of the commandant of Auschwitz. It reflects to the author's experience of caring for survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides during his previous lengthy career in mental health care. Much of his professional life involved dealing with perpetrators and victims of crime. Trauma, as a factor in mental health difficulties, is better understood today, but still there is a tendency to dismiss those who have had experiences that most of us cannot comprehend. In this book the author helps to explain some common mental and physical health issues that may have impacted upon survivors of the Holocaust. He provides information about some of the key people involved in the Holocaust, and the rise of National Socialism. Some survivor accounts are dealt with in order to explore how they coped when millions of others perished. He also looks as some modern experiments that have sought to explore the capacity of otherwise decent people to behave cruelly towards others. In a world in which intolerance and hatred still exist, he also considers how we treat those who flee war zones today, and whether we need to get back in touch with our humanity.

Tribalism and Prejudice: The Far-Right and Lessons From Historyseeks to understand the prevalence and resurgence of far-right politics in modern society, particularly where this relates to tribalism and prejudice that could have harmful consequences. The book looks at the genocides of the Holocaust and in Bosnia as examples. Consideration is given to the efforts of the international community to address the horrors of the Second World War by imposing legal sanctions and to punish wrongdoers and to protect the vulnerable. The criteria that lead to genocide are explored, as are the factors that may predispose some people to prejudice, and ultimately to genocide. The propaganda of hate has a ready and willing audience. Some would appear to be more receptive to rhetoric that dehumanises others, and some certainly gain from the use of simple messages to convey, without challenge, messages that could be harmful. There are no easy answers, but in accessing some of the available academic research, the author has sought to explore some of them in order to help equip readers to better understand and challenge hate.

About the Author

Simon Bell is a retired mental health nurse. He had a 37 year nursing career in the U.K. For 35 years he worked in mental health care, and for 22 years he worked specifically with suspects, defendants and offenders with mental health problems. Some of the offenders he dealt with caused significant harm to others, and many had personal trauma experiences linked to all forms of childhood abuse. During the early part of his career he worked in old asylum care. Most of the patients were classed as 'long-stay' and had spent years, and sometimes decades, in hospital. Amongst those patients were survivors of the war in Europe, including combatants, civilians, and some who had survived the Holocaust. Over the years the author has dealt with survivors of other genocides, military personnel who had helped liberate the oppressed, and refugees who had fled warzones. These experiences have had a significant impact and reinforced a desire to help ensure that the world continues to learn from the lessons of the past.
