(January 9, 2018, San Diego, CA) - Fitzgerald Knaier LLP, a trial-oriented litigation boutique, has strengthened its intellectual property litigation capability by joining forces with veteran intellectual property litigator David Beckwith. Beckwith is a trial and appellate lawyer specializing in intellectual property litigation, with an emphasis on patent and trade secret disputes. He has more than 30 years of courtroom experience representing a diverse range of domestic and multinational industries, including medical devices, smartphones, internet security, and biotechnology. He has successfully represented clients in courtrooms across the country at both state and federal levels, and also in the International Trade Commission. David's appellate experience includes the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
Beckwith's complex litigation experience includes successful representations in matters involving ERISA, RICO, trade secrets, and unfair competition. Successes include multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for patent-owners, and rulings of non-infringement when representing defendants accused of patent infringement. Pro bono matters include representing Surfrider in beach access disputes, and a high profile dispute with the State of California relating to the systematic denial of foster care benefits.
Beckwith has earned an "AV Preeminent" peer-review rating, reflecting his achievement of professional excellence and ethical standards. He has practiced at two patent specialty firms, and was a partner at McDermott, Will & Emery for over a decade.
The firm's managing partner Ken Fitzgerald said, "I am very excited to practice with Dave. We've known each other for nearly thirty years, going back to my summer clerkship at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, where Dave was a senior associate. One of my first cases in private practice at Latham & Watkins was against him. Dave immediately earned my respect for his knowledge of the law, his skill as an advocate and negotiator, and his principled, civil approach to the litigation process. Dave's deep experience in patent litigation and technology cases adds to our capabilities in the intellectual property litigation field, and we are looking forward to collaborating with him for the benefit of our clients."
