STATESVILLE, N.C. - Dec. 26, 2017 - PRLog -- Getting a new puppy at the holidays is often exciting for new puppy owners, but often overlooked is the puppies' perspective. Training Canines LLC Founder, and known to many as the Canine Scientist, Kim Paciotti, specializes in early puppy development.  "Many families introduce a new puppy at the holidays when everyone is home to help the puppy adjust," stated Paciotti.  "Often overlooked is the anxiety that puppy will face when kids go back to school and parents back to work.  The puppy becomes accustomed to all the attention they receive when they first arrive, only to have their routine quickly change.  If not careful this could turn them into an anxious dog for life!"

Paciotti is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, and tells us "puppies go through many emotional stages between 0 and 16 weeks.  Behaviors learned at this time whether good or bad influence and shape how a puppy will interact for many years to come.  Often families rush into teaching obedience commands, however concentrating on a puppies' temperament by building their confidence is the key.  Puppies need to learn to do things for themselves.  Many will coddle a puppy if they see them get anxious, and that actually just reinforces.  The puppy thinks they are supposed to feel that way.  Age of the puppy also plays a huge factor too.  Between 8-11 weeks old is the most fearful time for any puppy."

When asked what new puppy parents can do, Paciotti gave this advice.  "Simply talk to the dog, in a calm loving voice.  The dog may not fully understand what you are saying, however they will feel your calmness, which in turn makes them confident.  Teach them about their new surroundings, name and explain everything.  The puppy will learn from your reactions to items.  They learn to imitate your feelings.  If you are upset your puppy will be, if you are calm, your puppy will be that way as well.  Try to expose them to everyday items.  Ring the door bell, slam a door, let them hear a dog bark, or a siren sound.  These all are items they may hear when you are away.  If they learn what these items are when you are there, they won't be afraid when you are gone!" As an aid in training, Paciotti has developed the 'Puppy Cradle', a bed that simulates the fetal position, which helps puppies feel secure and confident in their surroundings.

Paciotti says following these simple tips will help you and your puppy avoid the Christmas puppy blues and start the New Year off on the right paw!
