ROSEVILLE, Minn. - Dec. 5, 2017 - PRLog -- Building Maintenance Management, a Twin Cities commercial property maintenance company, offers tips to stay safe during the holiday season. Property managers, tenants and really everyone can benefit by keeping a few important things in mind during this busy time of year.

Christmas time usually includes lights and decorations, which can lead to many safety hazards. However, by knowing the potential issues, one can usually prevent a disaster from happening.

When putting up a tree for decoration, it's important to make sure it is at least 3 feet from any heat source, such as vents, radiators and fireplaces. If it's a live tree, it needs to be watered frequently, usually once a day. Ornaments that are breakable or have metal hooks should be placed toward the top of the tree, out of reach from small children and pets.

When decorating with lights, one should check to be sure there are no exposed or frayed wires, loose connections or broken sockets. Indoor lights should only be used indoors and outdoor lights outdoors. Outdoor lights should be fastened securely with insulated staples or hooks to avoid wind damage. They should never be nailed, tacked or the wires stressed while hanging. It's also important to keep plugs off the ground, away from snow and puddles.

Angel hair can often be used this time of year. However, this product is made from spun glass which can irritate eyes and skin. Decorators should wear gloves when handling it or substitute non-flammable cotton. Another potentially dangerous decorating item is artificial snow. These sprays can irritate lungs if inhaled, so it's important to follow directions carefully.

Lighted candles should not be used near trees, boughs, curtains or other flammable items. Burning candles should never be left unattended or within reach of children.

When putting up holiday decorations, one should always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. One should not stand on chairs, desks or other furniture. If using a step ladder near a doorway, the door should be locked or barricaded and signs posted so no one opens it and accidentally knocks the person off the ladder. If using a ladder outside, one should get down immediately if high winds, rain or snow begins.

A straight or extension ladder should be placed one foot away from the surface it rests against for every four feet of ladder height. It's important to always climb a ladder facing it and gripping the rungs, not the side rails. Three points of contact should always be on the ladder: two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand. Rather than leaning too far away from the ladder, one should get down and reposition the ladder closer to where they need it.

These are just a few tips to make the holiday season safe and enjoyable for everyone at your property.
