The University, now into its tenth year of establishment, has increased its cache of open distance learning (ODL) programmes for part-time study to meet the growing demand for knowledge and skilled workers in Malaysia. Through the ODL system, learners can study anywhere, anytime according to their own pace and schedule, and also continue with their jobs while they study.

WOU currently offers more than 50 ODL programmes, including Bachelor's and Master's degrees, in disciplines like electronics, management, accounting, sales and marketing, psychology, construction management, manufacturing, education and English Studies. WOU delivers extensive support to help learners cope with study and work. Students have easy access to online learning materials, the student portal, the learning management system, digital library resources and other facilities, and are supported by experienced tutors/academics and Regional Centres staff nationwide.

All WOU programmes are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and approved by the Ministry of Higher Education. The University earned a Tier 5 or 'excellent' rating for the quality of its undergraduate teaching and learning in the 2011 and 2013 SETARA local university ranking exercise.  Moreover, 38 out of WOU's total programme offerings have received full accreditation status from MQA while 13 have received recognition from the Public Service Department (JPA) following the graduation of its students over the years.

In conjunction with its tenth anniversary, WOU is offering additional financial assistance up to RM1000 to new students. Students may also explore other aids like the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawals and the PTPTN (National Higher Education Fund) loan.
