Terminalia Arjuna
(usually simply referred to as Arjuna) is a tree bark that is used medicinally in Ayurveda for the purposes of cardiovascular health pertaining to the heart itself. It has a large variety of bioactivecompounds , with the water extract showing promise at improving left ventricle function of the heart without any observable toxicity of side effects when taken at 500mg thrice a day (every 8 hours). The tree's thick, white-to-pinkish-gray bark is probably the most widely used cardiac herbal medicine in Ayurvedic medicine. Doctors in India use it for a variety of cardiovascular conditions; it is thought of as beneficial for nearly all heart and circulatory systems. Among prescribed in India are cardiac failure, hypertension, angina, endocarditis, pericarditis, and edema.

According to Dr.Kumar Pati, Arjuna extracts exert anti-inflammatory effects that help combat the excessive immune response that leads to arterial plaque and blood vessel occlusions.  And they help restore abnormal lipid (cholesterol) profiles that contributes to plaque formation. In addition, Arjuna extracts enhance heart muscle tone, improving its "squeeze" and increasing the amount of blood it can pump each second without exhaustion

There are numerous human studies conducted on Arjuna bark, although many of them are low in sample size. Nevertheless, the water extract appears to be effective in improving cardiac function in persons who have recently undergone cardiac trauma or injury; Myocardial Infarction is the most commonly researched ailment in this regard. Only one study exists on otherwise healthy persons, but Arjuna showed benefit in improving left ventricle function in an exercise test and the benefits may affect a person regardless of health state.

In animal models, this extract appears to exert protection on cardiac tissue in response to various cardiac insults including beta adrenergic agonists (like Ephedrine, although isoproterenol was used in the studies) and catecholamines themselves.Other extracts such as ethanolic or acetone, with different bioactive compounds , may not have similar cardio protective effects (no human trials, but some in vitro evidence suggesting the bioactive compounds  are not in these extracts).

Ayurvedic treatise documented drugs employed in Hridroga (Heart disease). Charaka introduced ten drugs under Hridya Mahakashaya group that comprises mostly like ascorbic acid of citrus fruits in it. It is proven that certain phytoconstituents present in these herbs help to maintain a healthy state of blood vessels including coronary arteries. Heart diseases are categorized according to Doshika dominance and Krimi. It appears to be very difficult to incorporate all the cardiovascular conditions described by modern medical science into these varieties. A critical analysis of the herbal lore utilized in the management of Hridroga (Heart disease) like Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna (Roxb.) Wight and Arn.), Pushkarmoola (Inula racemosa Hook. f.), Bala (Sida cordifolia Linn.), Nagabala (Sida humilis Linn.), Shunthi (Zingiber officinale Roscoe.), Pippali (Piper longum Linn.), Yashtimadhu (Glyccerrhiza glabra Linn.), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula Retz.) and Dashmoola, etc., clearly indicates that they are possessing hypotensive, hypocholestremic, anti-platelet and thrombolytic activities which play a crucial role in the management of cardio-vascular and cerebrovascular disorders.

Scientific evidence is available on the usefulness of several Ayurvedic drugs in cardiovascular diseases. Clinical studies have shown the efficacy of the bark of T. arjuna in congestive cardiac failure, chronic stable anginaand hypertension.T. arjuna and its constituent, Arjunolic acid have shown cardioprotective effects due to antioxidant activity in rats.  www.bestnutrition.com
