ISO 50001 Revision Update: Moving Forward with Committee Draft 2

By: SGS S.A

GENEVA - Aug. 30, 2016 - PRLog -- In June 2016, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) announced that ISO 50001, the standard for energy management systems (EnMS) would be the latest standard to undergo the ISO revision process.

The latest draft of ISO 50001, Committee Draft 2 (CD2), was issued and circulated by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 242 on August 2, 2016. Comments must be compiled and returned to ISO by October 26, 2016.

ISO 50001 was established to help organizations improve energy performance and reduce energy costs. This standard uses a systematic approach toward achieving continual improvement in energy performance, efficiency, use and consumption. According to ISO, available evidence shows that organizations adopting the ISO 50001 standard benefit from initial energy improvements of 10% or more and achieve net cost savings, mostly through low cost or no cost changes to operations.

Based on currently available information, the new revision of ISO 50001 will probably be published by end of 2018/beginning of 2019, in line with other ISO standards that are being or have been revised. The new revision will incorporate the same high level structure and common text from Annex SL High Level Structure that is included in ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015. This ensures that ISO 50001 maintains a high level of compatibility with other management system standards.

ISO 50001 has become increasingly important since its release five years ago. Nearly 7,000 organizations were certified to the standard by the end of 2014. It is business friendly, globally relevant and transformational.

Further information and updates on the development of ISO 50001 and its publication schedule will be issued by SGS as they become available.
