By: Film Lab, Inc. Written by actor and Film Lab President Jennifer Betit Yen, and starring Jo Yang, Nikole Marone, Albert Chan, and Deborah Kuhn, among others, the film addresses elder abuse through a fictional narrative designed to increase awareness of a widespread societal problem and to provide viewers with the motivation and tools to combat elder abuse. Directors Stratton and Kim shot and edited the film. For the complete cast and to learn more about the film, visit: www.TheOppositeOfAFairyTale.com. One version of the film previewed at The Museum of Chinese in American ("MOCA") in June to a sold out, standing room only crowd. One elder abuse survivor who attended said after the film, "I'm very happy that Jennifer has done this film because, for the first time, we're talking about elder abuse. How many people heard of elder abuse before they saw this film? Not very many." The film was inspired by the story of Betit Yen's grandmother, artist Josephine Chuch Liu Yen. Founded in 1978, AAIFF is the first and longest running festival in the U.S. to exhibit the film and video work by media artists of Asian descent and about the Asian American experience. AAIFF is a leading showcase for Asian American and Asian independent film and video.
