IOWA CITY, Iowa - June 23, 2016 - PRLog -- Ms. Margaret Butler was recenty hired by Hope Springs Behavioral Consultants as a  Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Ms. Butler sees children, adolescents, and adults for medication management of a wide range of mental health disorders. What Do Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) Do?Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners assess, diagnose, and treat individuals and families with psychiatric disorders or the potential for such disorders using their full scope of therapeutic skills, including the prescription of medication and administration of psychotherapy.  Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners have full scope prescriptive authority and in some cases, also provide counseling. More information can be found by visiting the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners at www.aanp.org.

How do their roles differ from psychologists or even psychiatrists and social workers?

As a matter of fact, all of the professionals in these positions can be involved in psychotherapy, but only advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), such as the PMHNP, and psychiatrists can prescribe medication. Social workers and psychologists cannot. What may be more important is that all of these providers can practice independently, providing care where it may otherwise be inaccessible, although they are always under the authority of Iowa state law when it comes to scope of practice.
