By: SilRay To celebrate the school's transition to solar energy, St. Nicholas held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, May 19 at 8:00 a.m. during its morning assembly. John Harpootlian, Mayor of Los Altos Hills; Father John Poncini, Pastor of St. William and St. Nicholas Parishes; Matt Komar, Principal of St. Nicholas Catholic School; and April Zhong, CEO of SilRay each spoke at the event, informing the 240 students in attendance about the importance of protecting the environment and how renewable energy technologies such as solar contribute to that goal. "This ribbon cutting marks the completion of SilRay's solar installation at St. Nicholas School, as part of SilRay's ongoing commitment to empowering the community with low-cost, clean, renewable energy," said Harpootlian during his opening remarks. "When you look at this installation, it's only part the equation. This installation will make electricity less expensive, but you can also save energy in your personal life. For example, turn off the lights when you leave the room, adjust the thermostat for heating or cooling, use less water. I have Los Altos Hills pins for those students who volunteer to make that effort." "The energy cost savings from this system will make more funds available for students, teachers and educational programs at the school," said Zhong. "My hope for the students is that they will become solar ambassadors who will advocate for renewable energy in the community, setting an example for environmental stewardship. As a proud parent of a St. Nicholas School student, I have witnessed firsthand the school's commitment to social awareness and leadership in both the Catholic and local communities." SilRay donated the 105 Polysilicon solar panels to St. Nicholas, which are expected to produce over 37,210 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year. The installation is expected to prevent 36 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the environment. In addition to reducing the school's electricity costs, the solar system has increased the student's desire to learn more about renewable energy. After the ceremony, SilRay's staff was invited to instruct a series of classes on solar energy to the sixth-grade students.
