| ![]() Nickel Tests in REACH Annex XVII Undergo UpdateThe EU has recently updated the list of standards for demonstrating compliance with nickel release under ANNEX XVII of REACH.
In September 2015 the Comité Europeén de Normalisation (CEN, European Committee for Standardization) - Eliminating measured migration values in the ‘inconclusive’ - Translating the measured migration values in the ‘inconclusive’ According to EN 1811:2011+A1: CEN Standards Harmonized On 15 January 2016, Commission Communication 2016/C 014/04 [2] was published in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU) harmonizing the list of standards for demonstrating presumption of conformity with nickel release under entry 27 of ANNEX XVII of REACH [3]. This revised list contains the following three harmonized standards: - EN 1811:2011+A1: - EN 12472:2005+A1: - EN 16128:2011 ‘Reference test method for release of nickel from those parts of spectacle frames and sunglasses intended to come into close and prolonged contact with the skin’ EN 16128:2011 [4] is technically unchanged as compared to EN 1811:1998+A1: These harmonized standards are European standards developed by a recognized European Standards Organization following a request from the European Commission. Manufacturers, other economic operators, or conformity assessment bodies can use these harmonized standards to demonstrate that affected products comply with nickel release under Annex XVII of REACH. Commission Communication 2016/C 014/04 does not indicate when the standards take effect, but they can be considered as taking effect immediately, that is, 15 January 2016.
