1in4 Initiative Focuses on Reducing the Stigma of Mental Health Concerns

CHICAGO - Jan. 4, 2016 - PRLog -- CuraLinc Healthcare, a global provider of employee assistance (EAP) programs, and Marquee Health, a leading provider of total well-being solutions, today announced the ‘1in4’ campaign. This initiative, which is based on the premise that one in four people suffers from a mental health disorder every year, focuses on normalizing the need for mental health resources and removing the barriers for those who want to access care. By opening up the conversation regarding these significant – yet treatable – issues, CuraLinc and Marquee hope to raise more awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health concerns.

While the 1in4 initiative includes a resource-heavy web portal (www.1in4.info), as well as a variety of materials to promote the campaign, the key to making 1in4 a success is communication, according to CuraLinc’s Vice President of Administration, David Pawlowski, LCPC, CEAP. “What we've seen far too often is mental illness leading to social and emotional isolation – people in tremendous pain feeling cut off from the very resources that are in place to help. That's why it's so important to start the conversation when you notice a change in someone you know, whether it's a friend, a family member or a co-worker. You don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes all it takes is a few caring words, and a reminder that help is available.”

The connection between emotional and physical health is well documented. According to Jonathon Short, President of Marquee Health, starting the conversation about a mental health concern may have a significant impact on someone’s overall well-being, “Starting the conversation when you first notice a mental health concern cannot only mitigate further emotional health issues, but it also can have a huge impact on comorbid physical health issues.”
