NJMET VP Joseph Federico Publishes Tinning & Solderability Testing Article in US Tech December Issue
Solderability Testing determines if the surface finish of component leads will provide for acceptable solder connections. Solder finishes can degrade over time. Using accelerated aging techniques can estimate the storage life of components.
Tinning is the method of replacing the existing surface finish of a solderable termination with a new one. By dipping the components into a molten solder bath, the tin in the bath dissolves and removes the existing surface finish. Upon removal from the bath, the component has a new solder finish. This method is also used to replace a lead-free finish with one that contains lead.
Mr. Federico, a Wayne, NJ resident, has worked as an engineer at NJ MET Inc. for nearly 40 years. He has lectured around the world on the subject of proper electronic component testing and the epidemic of the cloned and counterfeit component detection. He has degrees in Electrical Engineering Technology as well as Business Administration.
