AUSTIN, Texas - Dec. 14, 2015 - PRLog -- There is an explosive "movement" of individuals wanting to serve people at the end of life in ways we have not seen before. Many people have been doing this through hospital and hospice volunteering.

Over the last 10 years, as I have been serving as an end of life doula myself and training others, these people that once went directly to hospitals and hospices are now wanting to serve in a deeper way, in a broader way than they are able to do within an organization.

As a mentor and trainer, within healthcare organizations and privately, of end of life practitioners, doulas and midwives, my belief has always been that there needs to be a way where this movement of the independent practitioner can intersect with present day healthcare to benefit everyone.

Present day healthcare services are squeezed for time, doulas and practitioners need experiences, the person who is ill and dying needs attention. If we can work together on creating a system that uses the skills of the doulas in serving people as they gain practical mastery of the art of it all, we will best serve everyone who is concerned that these doulas are well trained.

It is not on the front end where we need to spend our energy and resources in trying to control this role to utilize this group of people (credentialing their knowledge). However they come to the knowing of their skills and desire to assist the ill and dying (whether it be through personal experience with family and friends or through a training or however), what we can very easily do is utilize them by putting them to work in our organizations.

Put them in places where there are many people (from various disciplines) watching and having input and where it would be easy to integrate them into an organization where they can serve people. We can guide them on the job there, have the practicum/internship guidelines there, based on what is needed in that environment and have them gain experience here. We can optimally utilize them, they can get the experience they are wanting and the public will be served on a higher level.

Everyone wins. Something to consider, isn't it?
