Holiday Car Buying Comes Back in a Big Way

In the 2015-16 holiday season, auto sales are being driven by direct mail campaigns.

(October 29, 2015) – From Christmas to New Year’s to President’s Day, people are once again making big ticket purchases for themselves and their loved ones for the holidays – most notably, new and pre-owned vehicles. But according to consumer experts, buying a new car for the holidays is more than a comeback trend: It’s also smart shopping. An Autotrader.com report says that buying a new car at the end of the calendar year is still a good strategy, and Consumer Affairs reports that Black Friday savings are worth it for car buyers. In response, people will be primed for automotive buying during the 2015-16 holiday season.

“This year, people will be looking at the direct mailers they receive from auto dealers a lot more closely,” says James Kennedy of Kennedy Marketing Group. Because Kennedy’s company produces direct mail campaigns for auto dealers, he knows what this year’s buyers are looking for. “They want to see a mailer that has a handwritten note inside,” he says, “but making sure they open it is the first hurdle. If it has a hand-addressed envelope with a first class postage stamp, they’re far more likely to open it up and take a look.”

In the busy holiday season, dealers can’t be expected to design mailers, perform digital printing, handwrite notes, stuff envelopes and spend time at the post office. “We do all that legwork for them,” Kennedy says. “It’s a service we provide year-round for auto dealers, but we have a special holiday program that customizes mailers for whatever holiday they choose.” Black Friday is a particularly popular holiday among his 500+ dealer clients, as is New Year’s Day. “We can create a campaign around any holiday they want,” he says.

In this heavily digital age, dealers throughout the United States are taking advantage of Kennedy’s “throwback” marketing technique. “They’re seeing an incredible return on their investment,” he says, “especially when they use our holiday program.”
