Follow on Google News | Incredible Farm & Vintage Vehicle Collection Up For Auction in Overbrook, KSBy: Higgenbotham Auctioneers International Ross James Slagle was born in Anderson MO in 1922. His parents were what they referred to as "Missouri dirt farmers". He had an older brother and sister. At the age of 15 he traveled to Colorado with friends to pick peaches and other produce. While there he managed to save silver dollars and when he returned home he purchased his very first car.....a Model T with 30 of those dollars, He also began to "collect" clocks, toy trains, arrow heads and old toys. Auctions became his social life. He loved the old toys because he never had the them as a child. Money was tight and it went for food and necessities. Ross served in the Army in Italy and Austria during WWII, a fact he was extremely proud of. This man was a true patriot all of his life. When Ross left the Army in1945, he moved to Lawrence, Kansas and began to train as a union plumber, a career he had for over 50 years. He resided in Lawrence, Kansas until 1985 and then he found his farm.....5 miles east of Overbrook, Kansas. He sold 3 rental properties he owned in Lawrence and bought the farm and 20 acres. He now had the space he needed to house his collections and work on his vehicles. Ross knew folks everywhere you went. He truly was a social person and loved to visit. He shared his knowledge, as well as, collecting some along the way. He was an avid reader especially about vintage vehicles. Spend 15 minutes with him and his enthusiasm could convince you that you also shared thisinterest. Some might even compare him to the “Pickers” or called him a “Hoarder”. Returning from the Army he purchased a Harley Davidson and his vehicle collecting began! He bought some, bartered for some and hauled them home from near and far. He never met a set of wheels he didn't love. Ross was always talking of selling his vehicles, but when it came time to make the"deal",he just couldn't let go. His last project was to put wings on a fuselage he had collected so he could display a plane in his front pasture. You had to admire this challenge he set for himself at age 88. He worked on the vehicles, pulling engines, cleaning and even painting until his age prevented him continuing. This made him very sad as the vehicles were his life, We've all heard of "planes, trains and automobiles" Full Terms of the sale and additional property information can be found by visiting our website at Higgenbotham.com, or by calling 800-257-4161.
