350 Scouts from Northamptonshire Start their World-Walk Adventure

In a World’s first for the Scouting movement, groups of Scouts are walking in teams of 10 to Nyeri in Kenya – to the grave of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout movement – without leaving the County.

KETTERING, U.K. - Oct. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- Through a £10,000 grant from the Big Lottery, Northamptonshire’s Scouts have linked-up with local health and wellness Company Activ8rlives. Each Scout wears a BuddyBand2 waterproof activity tracker throughout the day and uploads their step count to their team’s website using an App on their Smartphone. Progress of the team of 10 is plotted on the spectucular route automatically.

Teams can see where the other teams have got to on Google EarthTM, to introduce a bit of motivating competitive spirit. They will need it: the journey is 8,000 miles long and will take 6 months to complete together. All this and not a Country border to cross or passport in sight!

The World-Walk Adventure is a team game. Everyone is encouraged to contribute only what they can manage and will be rewarded with a specially commissioned badge at the midway point and on completion.

We all know that being active everyday helps us to stay healthy and fit, raise our mood and help concentration at school. What is unique, is that this programme in Public Health is being delivered by a Charity not the NHS or Local Authority, with Mums and Dads as volunteer leaders (who also have to walk their talk as well).

The Scouts movement was founded at the start of the last Century when many children lived in wretched poverty. Ex Army Baden-Powell created clubs run by volunteers for impoverished children from the slums of London, where they learned new outdoor skills, leadership and how to keep themselves in good mental and physical health. Society is very different today, but the Scouts are still leading in teaching generations of young people the skills needed for life. World-Walk Adventure is a 21st Century version of what the modern Scouting movement represents today.

Martin Scudder, Leader of the 1st Higham Ferrers Group of Northamptonshire County Scouts commented:

“The World-Walk Adventure has been an excellent way to bring the scouts together for a single cause. It's rare to see this much enthusiasm from every young person for a single activity but every member of our group wants to take part, including leaders and many parents. There is a friendly rivalry between teams and it's the first thing the young people talk about each week at Scouts. I know for a fact they all talk about it at school as well. It becomes quite addictive to monitor your activity levels and make sure you hit your target each day and then translate that into the progress of the group on the walk to Nyeri. Our group has already walked over 700 miles collectively and the whole group has a real pride in what they are achieving. It's making being active fun.”

The Scouts and Explorers are enjoying taking part in the World-Walk Adventure and love the technology as well, as Aaron Scudder from the 1st Higham Ferrers Scouts explains:

“I'm really enjoying taking part and wearing the BuddyBand2. I was surprised how many steps each day I already do but now I want to do more and more. I wear the BuddyBand2 all day so it measures my sleep as well. Now I know what my mum means when she says I'm a wriggle monster. The app is really good and I like to show my friends how far we've gone on the map on my phone. I'm really enjoying the World-Walk Adventure, it's fun and exciting.”

If you or your Company would like to join these intrepid Adventurers by forming your own Community groups or as part of a Corporate Wellness Programme to help raise money for the many good causes supported by the Scouts (a registered Charity), you can contact the organisers for more information (t: 01480 352 821). When you call, just say that you want to walk to Kenya!
