Medical Director of the Preventive Cardiovascular Program at the University of Pennsylvania Joins Board of American Society for Preventive Cardiology

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Aug. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- Emil M. deGoma, MD, FACC, FAHA, FNLA, was recently elected to the American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) Board of Directors at its fourth annual Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Conference in Boca Raton, Fla.

"It's an honor to be elected to the Board of the American Society of Preventive Cardiology,” said Dr. deGoma. “The ASPC has a long history of significant contributions to the field and is well-positioned to lead efforts to turn the tide against the epidemic of cardiovascular disease. I look forward to working in this capacity to further advance the ASPC's mission to promote the prevention of cardiovascular disease and advocate for the preservation of cardiovascular health."

Dr. deGoma is medical director of the Preventive Cardiovascular Program at the University of Pennsylvania and assistant professor of medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. deGoma conducts patient-oriented research examining novel therapies for atherosclerosis and dyslipidemia, genetic testing for familial hypercholesterolemia, non-invasive atherosclerosis imaging, and decision aids to facilitate shared decision-making in preventive cardiology. He received the Young Investigator Award from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), and his work was recognized by the National Lipid Association’s Young Investigator Award. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology and Current Atherosclerosis Reports. He currently also serves on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Chapter of the National Lipid Association, and is a member of the publications committee of the Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation. Among other original research manuscripts and review articles, he has contributed to the “Atherosclerosis Risk Assessment” chapter of the American College of Cardiology’s Self-Assessment Program since 2011.

Dr. deGoma received his Bachelor of Arts degree in biochemical sciences and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1997 and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School in 2003. He completed his clinical training in internal medicine and cardiology at Stanford University, where he also served as chief resident from 2006–2007. He received advanced training in vascular medicine and clinical research methodology through the University of Pennsylvania NIH K12 Vascular Training Program before joining the faculty in 2011.

In recent years, the ASPC's focus shifted from acting as an insular organization of academic experts to one with a focused vision of the interdisciplinary value it can bring to the broader healthcare and scientific community. The society represents an increasingly multidisciplinary group of healthcare providers (including nurses, nurse practitioners, dieticians, and other healthcare specialists in addition to physicians) along with researchers and industry representatives who share an interest in, and a passion for, preventive cardiology.
