New Passes Incentivize Children to Read Over Summer

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Aug. 3, 2015 - PRLog -- The public libraries in Waukesha County have been offering summer library programs for decades and this year was no different! The idea behind summer library programs is that it motivates children and teens to continue reading throughout the summer months to prevent summer reading loss. This refers to the decline in children’s reading development that can occur during the summer months while children are away from the classroom (Allington & McGill-Franzen, 2003). When children and teens read and then return to the library, they are rewarded with program motivators such as books or passes to local attractions. Imagine getting in free to the Wisconsin State Fair or burning off some energy at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park for completing some recreational reading over the summer. This year we had some new passes (marked with asterisks) to incentivize children and teens to read over the summer.
