Adding a braking system to your zip line allows for a faster and steeper ride without compromising on safety. And, depending on your skill set or sense for adventure, there are a variety of ways to “put the brakes on.”

There are two categories of braking methods: active and passive. An active brake is one that must be applied by the rider. The passive brake is one that brings the rider to a complete stop without any action on his/her part.

Many zip-line enthusiasts say that giving riders more control over their speed enhances the thrill of the ride. Active brakes also tend to be easier to set-up and can be used in a wide spectrum of zip-lining adventures.

But, for younger, or less skilled riders, passive brakes are generally considered safer. A passive brake will stop a rider even if they are freaking out and unable to stop themselves. Riders will come to a complete stop before they reach the end of the zip line.
