Sterlite Copper initiates cleaning of Srivaikuntam North Main Channel

THOOTHUKKUDI, India - July 16, 2015 - PRLog -- Sterlite Copper, a unit of Vedanta Limited has initiated cleaning work in north main channel of Srivaikuntam Reservoir. The inauguration of the project was held at Mangalakurichi today.

A special pooja was performed and the cleaning work commenced in the presence of Mr M Kumaravendhan, Head - HSE, Sterlite Copper and Mr D Udhayasuriyan, Chairman, Tamiraparani Project Committee.

The cleaning work of channel started at Srivaikuntam and will end at Sulavaikal, covering a distance of 22 kms. As the water flow in the channel is slowed down due to excess weed growth, farmers are finding it difficult to get the required quantity of water for irrigation. In such scenario, the undertook project will allow free flow of water in the channel benefitting 40,000 farmers covering around 12,500 acres of agricultural land in and around north main channel. The cleaning work is expected to be completed within two weeks.

The members of Tamiraparani Project Committee and Sterlite Copper officials were present during the function.
