Follow on Google News | Foundation Care is selected to provide cystic fibrosis patients with the new drug ORKAMBI™Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). CF is caused by defective or missing cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) proteins resulting from mutations in the CFTR gene. ORKAMBI is for adults and pediatric patients age 12 years and older: two tablets (each containing lumacaftor 200 mg/ivacaftor 125 mg) taken orally every 12 hours with fat-containing food. It has been approved to treat people that are homozygous for the F508del mutation, the most common cause of CF. People who have two copies of the F508del mutation, one inherited from each parent, account for approximately half of the CF population in the U.S. Foundation Care opened its doors in 2004 as a full service retail pharmacy with a specialty in treating cystic fibrosis. Since then, their pharmacists and staff have become extremely knowledgeable in the treatment of CF. Also, their relationships with caregivers, physicians, and insurance providers across the nation ensure that each patient receives the expertise and guidance needed in today’s complex healthcare world.
