Puerto Rico’s Indoor Environmental Experts Identify Allergen & Asthma Triggers due to Common Pest

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - June 9, 2015 - PRLog -- The mild climate in Puerto Rico and dense population in many of the islands’ towns and cities makes the region an ideal environment for cockroaches to flourish.   These insects are one of mankind’s most commonly found pests.

Thousands of species of cockroaches can be found worldwide, but just a handful of the species make up the vast majority of the pests found in homes and buildings across the Caribbean. Cockroaches are normally considered to be nocturnal insects, so people may not always be aware of an infestation until it has gotten out of hand. Their presence can not only make some people squirm, but can also lead to health concerns for building occupants. Cockroaches can spread pathogens and arealso the frequent cause of allergic reactions in people that are sensitive to their presence and they are a known asthma trigger.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports, “Droppings or body parts of cockroaches and other pests can trigger asthma. Certain proteins are found in cockroach feces and saliva and can cause allergic reactions or trigger asthma symptoms in some individuals.”
