LOUISVILLE, Ky. - June 5, 2015 - PRLog -- On Saturday, May 30th 2015, Active Heroes hosted their first cookout at the Military Family Community Center. The day was paired with Legal Aid Society so military families could visit and ask questions to lawyers in the closed conference rooms at the community center. Outside, the Active Heroes staff manned the grill and made juicy burgers and hotdogs for the families to enjoy on picnic tables or inside the activity room. Families challenged each other with board games and the Nintendo WII U or talked for several hours about their military service.

“It was a great time for all,” said founder of Active Heroes, Troy Yocum. “The opening of the Military Family Community Center has really helped hundreds of veterans and family members in the first few months since the ribbon cutting. We look forward to hosting more cookouts and activities for the families.”

Legal Aid Society also enjoyed the day. Seven families came to the cookout specifically to ask questions that included mortgage, divorce and litigation advice that was absolutely free. The Q&A sessions were open to honorably-discharged veterans, active duty, retired, National Guard, reserve service members and their spouses/children 18 or younger.

“Our mission is to pursue justice for people in poverty,” said Legal Aide Society lawyer and former Army Chaplain in the 101st Airborne Division, Sean Dennis. “The Legal Aid Society challenges the community to stand up for veterans.”
