LAN and PC Services Aims to Trap Spammers

Greenwich, CT, May 21, 2015 – LAN and PC Services founder Jeff Higgins has always been proactive in the war on spam, as the matter of fact he has a history of tracking spammers since the early 2000’s.  In 2005, he addressed the state of Connecticut for spamming http://www.newstimes.com/news/article/State-accused-of-spamming-243159.php.   LAN and PC Services helps protect many clients with filtering, firewalls and network security monitoring; and yet the negative effects of spam are still a huge threat to businesses and individuals alike.  More and more it becomes apparent that “honeypot technology” is necessary.

ROKSO (https://www.spamhaus.org/rokso/) keeps a list of the top spammers internationally and it is routinely updated.  Spam costs businesses up to $20.5 billion annually in decreased productivity as well as in technical expenses and that cost keeps rising.  The most prevalent type of spam is advertising-related email, closely followed by adult-related and unwanted emails related to financial matters.  Surprisingly, scams and fraud comprise only small fraction of all spam email; however, identity theft (also known as phishing) makes up three quarters of the complaints that cause real concern and the results can be crippling.

Honeypots are designed to alert of an attacker’s presence.  Attackers will use malware against anti-malware programs to see if they can dodge detection and they succeed up to 80% of the time.  Traditional defense technology because advanced attackers have the knowledge and resources to ensure their attack is going to work.  Honeypots should never be accessed by a legitimate user and can provide a decoy system that will cost an attacker time and effort as a way to combat spam.

There are production and research honeypots.  Research honeypots are a virtual system that hosts the vulnerable operating system on to a network accessible to the internet.  Production honeypots are really more of a decoy setup that is a more permanent solution and sets off an alert when an attacker enters.  These systems tend to have low false positive rates, detect internal and external hacking and require very little maintenance once set up.  LAN and PC Services is able to access a network and consult on which honeypot is best to deploy.
