By: Bridgeport MBDA Business Center The “Tale of Two Sherry’s” is one of Great pride and the BBG Summit is honored to feature these dynamic women who will no doubt bring an element to the BBG Summit unlike any other. The 1st Annual BBG Summit will provide a Native themed lunch prepared by Wampanoag Chef Sherry Pocknett, born and raised in Mashpee to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Sherry credits her passion and love of food to both her parents and her tribal life-ways. She was fortunate enough to grow up in the 60's where both parents were Wampanoag and lived traditionally. A Mother from a family of Great Chefs and a Father who provided for the family by hunting, fishing and bartering. As a child, Sherry was taught to harvest and eat by Seasonality. It was not long after she entered adulthood that Sherry formed her own business and put her cooking experience forth. With over 20 years of experience, Chef Pocknett has made a name for herself and has traveled up and down the East Coast year after year to food festivals, cultural bazaars and Pow Wows, in addition to catering private and corporate events. In particular, she catered a Pow Wow at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC for 20,000 people. To add to her experience, she is a culinary instructor. Sherry is, perhaps, Indian Country’s best-known Chef. The BBG Summit will end in a Reception which features Jazz Flutist Sherry Winston; who has performed in many of the major concert halls throughout the U.S. including the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Constitution Hall, and Lincoln Center. Sherry has performed at The White House for President and Mrs. Clinton during their last holiday party, and for former President George H.W. Bush at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC. She has appeared on many national TV shows and has been featured in national magazines and newspapers. Sherry has performed with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack to name a few. Sherry worked as National Director of Jazz Promotion at Columbia, Arista, GRP and Elektra- Asylum Records; ran her own Promotion Company and represented Uniworld Group in Japan. Some of Sherry’s awards include nominations for the NAACP “Image Award,” “Eubie Blake; “Howard University Alumni Award 1984 and 1989,” the Cultural Achievement Award by the National Black MBA; WBLS’s “Quiet Storm Award,” Partner in the Arts, Alpha Kappa Alpha; and the Louis Armstrong Award.
