Follow on Google News | Grand Prix Fun Port Style With Eskies On WheelsTrophies, a belly full of laughs, thrills and possibly spills and a year’s bragging rights are all up for grabs at Port Douglas Carnivale’s first official World Motorised Cooler (esky, chillybin) Championships.
By: Strategic PR Spectators on the day will be able to try their skills on the track for a small fee in between championship practice and qualifying sessions. Port Douglas Carnivale general manager Roy Weavers said lap times would be recorded, with each driver allowed three laps to qualify for the final. The 12 fastest drivers would compete for the race title over 25 laps. The Reef Marina at Port Douglas is hosting the championships on its grassed Fisherman’s Wharf area running alongside Dickson Inlet. A 70 metre long by 20 metre wide track (250 metre distance) has been specially designed with hairpin bends and maximum speed straights to test every driver’s skill. Mr Weavers said the 48-litre eskies – which can reach a top speed of 12 kilometres an hour – were sure to be a hit with families – not to mention the blokes. “Helmets and protective gear are provided and the event will be properly marshalled and controlled to ensure a professional and safe event,” he said. “We are expecting a fantastic day of fun and thrills and urge drivers to nominate now. Nothing fires up a sibling or mate’s rivalry like a motorised esky race.” Mr Weavers said spectators could attend the event free of charge or take advantage of the VIP seating in the balcony area for $15 per person. Age limits apply for drivers. For entry forms and race terms and conditions, visit http://www.carnivale.com.au/ End
