| Celebrate the History of the IROC-Z at Carlisle in 2015Popular ‘80s Era Camaro to be Featured at the Carlisle GM Nationals
By: Carlisle Events The display is just one part of the show, which runs June 26-28 at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds. Guests coming to Carlisle will take a trip back in time to remember the ‘80s, 3rd Gen Camaros and the IROC-Z. The 3rd Generation Camaro was GM’s car of choice to run in the popular International Race of Champions, otherwise known as the IROC series. From 1975-1989, IROC had used the Camaro as the car all drivers raced in to demonstrate their skill. The series proved to be a great marketing tool for Chevrolet division, and in 1985 the official IROC-Z Camaro was released as the ultimate performance package on the Third Gen. The car started as a Z-28 and then came equipped with a special graphics package, performance suspension, a lowered ride height, a frame brace (“wonder bar”) to better increase handling, an optional Tuned Port Injection engine, and other special features that made the IROC-Z great for carving corners. Overall, the IROC-Z package offered from 1985-1990 provided a great performance bump during a time when horsepower was still generally lacking in American cars. By creating an attractive graphics package and combining it with great handling, the IROC-Z cemented its position as the most sought-after and fun to drive 3rd Gen produced. The IROC-Z cars, and the 3rd Gen Camaro as a whole, still stand as prime examples of ‘80s automotive design. Some of the greatest names in racing drove Camaros in the IROC series, and now Carlisle is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the car and its racing heritage. These cars and more of the best from the GM family will be at Carlisle starting June 26. Showfield registration is available now with discounts in place through May 26. If not showing a car, consider a weekend pass. Tickets for the three-day event run $10 per day, with kids 12 and under admitted free; however, a three-day pass costs just $15. There are also hundreds of GM specific parts vendors, dealers and retailers, plus cars for sale via the car corral.
