LOS ANGELES - March 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Los Angeles -- Miami Beach, one of the most storied and notorious of American cities, is blowing out all the jams in March to celebrate its centennial, featuring a 100-hour “non-stop” festival highlighting all that is glorious and notorious about the popular south Florida playground.

But how many people know about the man who had the vision to develop Miami Beach on a narrow spit of Florida swamp land?

His name was Carl G. Fisher. First-time author Jerry M. Fisher has set the record straight on this remarkable man in THE PACESETTER, a definitive biography of Carl Fisher, who is Jerry Fisher’s cousin. Carl Fisher, a man with a sixth-grade education but possessed of unbounded vision, also built a speedway in his hometown of Indianapolis that became the home of the country’s premier racing event, the Indianapolis 500.

He is also responsible for construction of the Lincoln and Dixie highways, which brought America into the 20th century, and for turning Montauk, New York into a fashionable place to live.  Noted historian David McCullough, who narrated MR. MIAMI BEACH, a 1998 PBS film about Fisher, has said the show “is one of my favorites … if the film has brought THE PACESETTER more attention, that’s all to the good.”

THE PACESETTER has also drawn praise from the Indianapolis Star, which said it is “a fascinating book about a fascinating but forgotten man.” The prestigious Library Journal noted that THE PACESETTER was written “to offset a general lack of biographical information” about Carl Fisher, calling the book “extensively researched” with “significant details about Fisher’s projects.”

Why has such a man been virtually forgotten?

“He fiercely guarded his private life,” Jerry Fisher says. “Carl Fisher was a humble man. (He) remained opposed to publication of biographical information about himself.”

Fisher has also co-written a screenplay about Carl Fisher, based on THE PACESETTER.
