Follow on Google News | Local Barista To Serve as Ambassador of New Orleans at Barista Guild of America Winter CampNew Orleans based Mojo Coffee will send Jackie Bohne for national training
By: Mojo Coffee House Jackie Bohne, a local barista, will serve as a New Orleans ambassador to advance her skills, create relationships with industry professionals from across the country, and ultimately bring these talents back to New Orleans. At present, Ms. Bohne will be the only attendee representing New Orleans at the Guild's Barista Camp Winter 2015 in Buford, Georgia. She will be testing for her BGA Level 1 Certification which must be earned through testing regardless of an attendee's years of work experience in the field. The testing adheres to strict Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) protocols which were developed by a consensus of industry specialists over several years for the standardization of coffee brewing and cupping and the creation of espresso and espresso-based beverages. One of those specialists worked hand in hand with the owners in creating Mojo Coffee House, Bob Arceneaux, who was one of the executive council members and resides on the current board of the SCAA insisting that the New Orleans company maintain the highest standards as well as work as an ambassador to the community espousing the importance of responsibly sourced and fairly traded coffee. The motivation behind Mojo Coffee House is their unique standard of excellence. In a city with a rich coffee history and growing craft coffee movement, Mojo Coffee House has become a specialty coffee destination on Magazine Street and Freret Street. With global offerings from Central and South America, Asia and Africa featured on a seasonal basis, Mojo Coffee House has earned a following from their allegiance to local growers, roasters and ingredients. “We are incredibly proud of Jackie. At a time when coffee culture and techniques are being imported from places like Portland and Seattle, Jackie and the team have been essential in communicating the importance of using local roasters and locally sourced products from right here in Louisiana,” remarked co-owner Demian Estevez, a previous two time BGA Barista Camp attendee himself. The commitment to local sourcing stretches to every aspect of the Mojo Coffee House experience which includes training locals to be stewards of the industry rather than recruiting experts from other markets and sourcing local ingredients. Sources include Kleinpeter Farms for dairy products, Domino Sugar and La Canne for raw sugar, and using house made syrups from local extracts. “We were early adopters of the third wave coffee movement and the rare craft coffee movement,” said Estevez. “But we have always found a way to do it locally. Now we want to make that a movement.” For more information, to discuss sustainable local sourcing or to set up an interview with a Mojo Coffee representative, please contact Reid Stone 504.451.4282 or email reid@hero-farm.com Mojo Coffee Locations: 1500 Magazine St, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130 4700 Freret St, New Orleans, Louisiana 70115 Hours: M – F 6:30 am – 12:00 am; Sat/Sun 7:00 am – 12:00 am Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ End
