Transit Workers Go Door to Door To Push For Expansion of Marta in Clayton County

Citizens now rely on overpriced, unregulated an unsafe private vans

RIVERDALE, Ga. - Oct. 24, 2014 - PRLog -- Clayton County, Georgia- This Saturday, October 25, 2014 scores of transportation workers will be out in force in Clayton County, knocking on voters doors to urge them to vote to expand MARTA to Clayton County in the November 4 referendum. Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International President Lawrence Hanley will join them in Atlanta to support the effort.

Expansion of MARTA is critical to the future of Clayton County, where many ATU Local 732 members face the same challenges getting to work as other working people do. The only option for most citizens is overpriced, unregulated and unsafe private vans, many operating without commercial drivers licenses.

"Many young men can't take jobs, many students can't get to school and many seniors can't get to the doctor because there aren't enough buses or rail in Clayton County", says Curtis Howard, president of ATU Local 732, representing MARTA workers. "Or they risk their safety by relying on these unregulated, expensive, so-called van services. Voting for the referendum will ensure safe, reliable and affordable bus service."

"Furthermore, public transit is vital to a thriving community," he adds, "It provides mobility for all, is critical to economic growth, helps to fight pollution and improves the overall health of a community."

"We'll be doing retail politics the old fashioned leather shoe way", explains Howard. "We don't have the big PAC dollars like the Koch brothers and their elitist friends to buy ads to get our message across, but we do have army of organized and motivated people."

After the door-to-door canvassing, Howard and Hanley will join with transit workers on a bus tour of Clayton County to talk to citizens and businesses about the importance of passing the referendum and how Clayton County will benefit from expanded public transportation.

"Good public transit is the one thing you always see in any economically successful area of the country", says Hanley. "It provides transportation for workers to get to good jobs, and delivers customers to growing businesses. We think the citizens of Clayton County will see MARTA as the great benefit it is."

The ATU Clayton County Campaign & Voter Education starts at 9am at 6483 Highway 85 Riverdale, Georgia. After the door to door work is completed for the day, union members will join Local and International Presidents on a bus tour of Clayton County, riding along some of the proposed routes. Several stops are planned to talk to citizens and businesses that will benefit from public transportation reentering Clayton County.
