Drivers of Power Plant Cycling Revealed and Ranked

Twelve key drivers of power plant cycling are identified and ranked by new cycling causality reports prepared by Renewable Impacts LLC

LITTLETON, Colo. - Oct. 23, 2014 - PRLog -- Renewable Impacts announces the availability of a new series of power plant cycling causality reports designed to identify and rank the key drivers behind the costly up and down ramping or movement of power plant output. The reports, based on actual 2011 public hourly data, put aside assertions that variable renewable resources have become the prime drivers of power plant movement that increases wear and tear on equipment and drives up O&M operating costs. The unique Renewable Impacts eRECCTM analysis model determines and lists 12 drivers, from most to least responsible, for plant movement. The new report series covers 130 specific California power plants in the CAISO balancing authority including combustion turbines, steam turbines, combined cycles and cogenerators and can be found at www.renewableimpacts.com.

“We can now specifically report which of 12 system drivers including wind, solar, system load, large and small hydro, thermal, nuclear, imports, biomass, biogas, geothermal and the movements of specifically reported power plants are most responsible for wear and tear impacts.” said James R. Schetter, President of Renewable Impacts LLC. Mr. Schetter added, “This type of analytical information, which may change over time, should certainly help in any attempt to understand and gain full recovery of wear and tear costs from the responsible parties.”

The following is included in each of the 130 power plant cycling causality reports:

·          executive summary

·          tabular monthly and annual cycling causality impact data

·          description of the eRECC cycling causality framework

·          CAISO eRECC cycling causality procedures chart

·          alphabetical listing of all 130 cycling causality reports in the 2011 eRECC CAISO report series

Each reported power plant is also identified by a sub-category type, i.e. combustion turbines, steam turbines, combined cycles or cogenerators, to allow for the creation of a peer group for power plant comparisons.

The new Renewable Impacts cycling causality reports can be purchased and downloaded at the Renewable Impacts website: www.renewableimpacts.com.  A free downloadable sample report is also available at this site.
