Introduction to Internet Investigations

Course Description


This 8 hour course is designed to instruct sworn law enforcement personnel on investigating persons who have used the internet to facilitate their crime. The student will learn to investigate various leads, conduct internet surveillance, draft legal process, and identify suspects. Students will also learn how to identify, interpret and collect digital evidence. Platforms such as home internet, wifi access, and smart phones will be addressed. The class will culminate with a practical exam to walk students through the various steps of an internet investigation from receiving the lead to finally identifying and arresting a suspect. Students for this class should already have basic computer skills to build on, but may be new to internet investigations.  Detectives assigned to sex crime, fraud, robbery, homicide and missing persons will find this course especially helpful.

Primary Instructor

Detective Robert Mauro has fourteen years of law enforcement experience.  His tour of duty has included Patrol, Narcotics, Vice, and Sex Crime. Detective Mauro has been assigned to a federal task force that investigates all matters of child exploitation and child pornography upon the internet. For the past five years Detective Mauro has developed expertise in the area of internet and child pornography investigations. His case work has resulted in many state and federal cases that have not only resulted in lengthy prison sentences for defendants but also rescued several children nationwide that have been the victims of cruel sexual abuse. Detective Mauro has testified as an expert in child pornography investigations in both state and federal court. He has also been recognized by the FBI, United States Attorney's Office and Broward Victim's Rights Coalition for his work combating child exploitation on the internet.
