10 Ways to Improve a Smaller Bathroom

CHICAGO - July 17, 2014 - PRLog -- Many people have at least one bathroom in their home that is on the smaller side and homeowners may not know how spectacular that space can be.  You do not have to completely gut and renovate the entire bathroom to transform the space into a room that you are proud of.  There are 10 bathroom tips that can make the room appear larger and will make the most of the space that you have.

The location of the sink is something that you should put some consideration into since most bathrooms have the sink located across from the shower.  In a smaller space, this can make getting in and out of the bathroom slightly more difficult, but if you install a corner sink, you can make more of the space you have.  Corner sinks make it easier to get in and out of the shower as well as it allows for more space when you first walk into the bathroom.

Another way that you can make your bathroom appear larger is to paint the walls and the ceiling the same color.  This helps the room to appear brighter, cleaner and bigger.  If you want to have a slight contrast in the color, you can paint the ceiling a shade lighter than the walls.  Similarly, a third way that you can improve your bathroom if you have tile is to have the wall color and the tile color match.  If you have contrasting colors, it can really make your bathroom appear smaller than it is, but the matching tones can really amplify your space.

A fourth way that you can improve your smaller bathroom is to have a floating vanity.  This will visually make your bathroom look larger and it also makes some space on the floor where you may be able to store some items that are smaller.  If a floating vanity is not something that you are interested in, a fifth idea is to have a rounded vanity in your bathroom instead.  In a smaller bathroom, every inch of space matters, and a standard vanity may take up too much room.  However, the rounded vanity is generally smaller and can fit more easily into the room.

A large mirror is another excellent way to make your space feel bigger than it is.  Incorporating a mirror that extends to the ceiling will give your bathroom that grand feeling.  Another added benefit is that two people would be able to use the mirror to get ready in the morning without feeling overcrowded.

A seventh tip is to have a clear shower door.  Many homeowners tend to choose an opaque shower door to give them a sense of privacy, but this can dramatically close off the room. Using clear glass will help give your bathroom that feeling of openness.  Another tip for the shower area is to store your bath mat when you are not using the shower.  Obviously you will want to have a bath mat for when you get out of the shower, but leaving it out all the time can close off the space.

Putting careful consideration into storage is a ninth way that you can make your bathroom look larger.  Towels hanging everywhere and clutter on the vanity can really make a room look smaller than it is.  Consider installing a towel rod on the back of the door or inside of a closet door so your towels have a place to go, and install a medicine cabinet or other decorative storage up on the wall that you can keep smaller items in that are usually left out.

A final way that you can maximize the space in your bathroom is to install a skylight.  Natural light is one of the best ways to add brightness and openness to a room.  If a skylight is not an option for your bathroom, you should at least consider installing a window to let in that natural light.
