Follow on Google News |  Nevada’s First Cat Café is Coming to Reno, NVBy: KittyKafe Cat cafés are very popular in Japan and have begun to pop up all over the world with successful cafés located all over Japan, in London and Taiwan. There are plans in the works to bring cat cafés to North America in Montreal and Vancouver, Canada, Portland, OR and Oakland and San Francisco, CA. In April 2014, PurinaONE opened a pop-up cat café in New York City, NY for four days. The café sold coffee and provided an atmosphere for cat lovers to sit and talk about loving cats as well as cat health and wellbeing. They hosted several cat related seminars over the four days as well as an adoption event with the North Shore Animal League. The pop up cat café was well received to say the least. There was a line of cat lovers down the street and around the corner for the duration of the event. Owner of the planned Reno café, Heather Howell, is a Reno local who first heard about cat cafés in Japan a few years ago and has been planning to open one up here in the US ever since. She is currently looking for the purrfect location in Reno to host the café. Since health department rules usually do not allow animals in a restaurant, the cat longue will have to have its own entrance so that no kitty paws set foot in the food service area. With this in mind, KittyKafe will be organized into three main areas: Food Service and Café Seating Area - This will be the main entrance to the café with access to the kitchen, food service and seating for those would like to simply watch the kitties from a distance. There will be no live felines in this area of the café. Cat and Human Lounge - My favorite area! This will be the area where kitties roam and you sip some foam :3 There will be both human and cat perches, cat toys, games, wifi, books and anything else we can think of to make a great cat and human chill zone. Cats Only Hideout - This area will be connected to the Cat and Human Lounge so that the cats can retreat to a more quite area when they have had their fill of human love for the moment. KittyKafe will be working closely with Nevada’s Humane Society to make sure that the cats in the café are safe, happy and healthy! Nevada’s Humane Society fosters our no-kill community and has helped thousands of animals get the care they need and find their human soul mates. They are also always testing and researching new and improved ideas on animal behavior, living conditions and overall ways to make sure the animals are as comfortable as possible on their transitions into their new homes. KittyKafe hopes to utilize Nevada’s Humane Society’s tried and true expertise to make sure that any kitties that grace our café with their animal magnetism are content to nap, lounge, and play their way into your heart. To make this dream a reality, KittyKafe has a crowdfunding campaign going until the end of July to help pay for the startup costs of the business! Opening a restaurant is one of the most expensive startups for a small business but with the added expenses of making it a cat sanctuary, costs to start this café are even higher than usual.
