New England Companies Have Significant Opportunity to Increase Revenue with Modern Programs

NEWTON, Mass. - May 28, 2014 - PRLog -- revenue + associates, a revenue agency, today released a study of 196 New England companies that operate nationally that showed a significant opportunity to increase revenue through a more comprehensive adoption of modern sales and marketing programs. The study looked at the implementation of 9 data-driven programs that usually help generate significant revenue at companies that adopt them. revenue + associates president Louis Gudema said that their adoption could be important not just for the companies studied but for the economic health of the region as a whole.

Out of a possible score of 9, the companies had an average score of 2.76, with a median score of 2. For companies operating nationally, as all of these companies do, a score of at least 5 was expected.

“Today over 1,000 companies are offering some form of sales and marketing software in dozens of categories,” said Gudema. “Many people in sales and marketing now feel overwhelmed by just the number of options, and even those who want to take advantage of these revenue generation opportunities often don’t know where to start.”

revenue + associates studied whether the companies had implemented these 9 modern, data-driven programs: analytics, social media marketing, a mobile-friendly website, search engine optimization, marketing automation, remarketing, search marketing, conversion optimization, and content marketing. Of the 9 programs, only analytics had been adopted by over 40% of the companies.

“This is ‘Moneyball’ for marketing and sales. When well run, these new, data-driven programs typically produce a high return on investment, especially when their impacts are combined and they are integrated with other programs such as direct mail, email, print advertising, and exhibiting at trade shows” said Gudema. “A small number of the companies know how to pull all the levers. They’re running 7, 8 or even all 9 of these programs so as to ramp up their revenue and grow rapidly, but most companies appeared to be leaving a considerable amount of revenue on the table.”

“Traditionally, trade associations and local and state governments have looked at such areas as education, innovation, tax and energy policy to produce regional competitive advantage,” said Gudema. “But these 196 companies collectively generate several billion dollars of revenue. And since they all operate nationally, and even globally, most of that is revenue that is brought into the region. Just a 10 percent increase in their revenue would mean hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of new jobs in New England. But the impact of these programs could easily be far more than that.”

The 196 companies that have headquarters in New England were chosen based on having approximately $10 million to $100 million in annual revenue and operating nationally and even globally. They represent B2B companies in a wide range of industries including high tech, medical devices, manufacturing, and services such as engineering and architecture.
