CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - May 16, 2014 - PRLog -- After 125 years in business, Mecco Marking & Traceability truly has made its mark.

Headquartered in Cranberry Township near Pittsburgh, Mecco will celebrate 125 years of marking innovation with an open house and factory tours on May 22. The event will begin at 2 p.m. at Mecco’s headquarters, 290 Executive Drive, Suite 200 in Cranberry Township.

“Mecco has a legacy of marking innovations dating back 125 years, and we are excited to share our history as well as our latest innovations with the community and the Pittsburgh region,” said Dave Sweet, President of Mecco Marking & Traceability.

Founded by Miles E. Cunningham in 1889 and incorporated in 1906, Mecco has led the way in industrial product marking and identification systems as marking techniques evolved from rubber stamps to steel stamps and metal marking to dot peen, bar code and laser marking.

Mecco recently introduced its patent-pending EtherMark technology, which allows marking systems to communicate directly with factory-floor PLCs. The new technology reduces custom programming and eliminates the need for fragile PCs on the shop floor, saving time and money.

Ground-breaking, innovative technology has been a constant at Mecco. Frank Speicher Sr. bought controlling interest in the company in 1924 and introduced the steel stamp and other metal marking product manufacturing.

“A lot of things have happened in 125 years,” said 83-year-old Edwin Speicher, one of Frank Speicher Sr.’s sons who led Mecco from 1950 through 2001. “It was quite a history. There weren’t many industries we weren’t involved with. We did a lot work with the aircraft, the automobile and steel.”

In 1989, the company was granted a patent for indenting a bar code into the surface of an object. Mecco also was at the forefront of the technology known as “Bumpy Bar Codes,” which led to installations at world-renowned companies such as John Deere, Caterpillar and Cummins Engine.

In 2002, a group of Pittsburgh business leaders purchased the company and consolidated its divisions into one new name: Mecco Marking & Traceability. Mecco has built upon the rich history of marking innovations. The company has experienced growth through its focus on innovative laser marking and dot peen technologies for workstations, portable marking, and integrated production lines while offering world class customer support.
