Improved A1C Levels in a Patient with Insulin-Dependent Type I Diabetes Undergoing Chiropractic Care

CHALFONT, Pa. - April 29, 2014 - PRLog -- A recent article in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health reported on a case report that documented the positive effects of chiropractic adjustments on a 4-year-old female with Type I Diabetes.

A 4-year-old female presented for chiropractic evaluation with the primary complaint being Insulin-Dependent Type I Diabetes.  The condition was discovered when she was 2 years old.  At the time of her diagnosis, her hemoglobin AIC was 7.2%. Optimal blood glucose control is defined by target hemoglobin of less than 7%.

“The patient’s mother reported that her daughter was a healthy baby and breastfed for 12 months,” said Dr. Walker, Chalfont-based, D.C., who follows health and wellness issues closely in professional journals and other publications, “and she never had any immunizations or childhood illnesses.”

Frequent urination and excessive thirst were the warning signs which prompted the patient’s mother to call the pediatrician and have a blood glucose test.  Type I diabetes occurs most often in children, but can occur at any age.  “Common symptoms include: excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, hunger, weight loss, numbness in feet, and blurry vision, “said Dr. Walker.

“The patient was seen a total of 24 times over approximately two months,” stated Dr. Walker “and because vertebral subluxations have neurological effects on the body that may affect immune and visceral function, chiropractic care was the only intervention used during that time in addition to a continuous subcutaneous insulin pump (CSII) and healthy nutritional choices.” The result was an improvement in the child’s hemoglobin AIC going from 7.2% to 6.5%.  She also had a decrease in the amount of insulin used each day, going from 15 units a day to 11.

“Intensive treatment of type I diabetes often does not succeed in achieving target AIC levels of less than 7.0%,” explained Dr. Walker, “and it is encouraged that further research in this area be performed.”
