By: IFAU, NPO 501(c)(3) Anatoly had been paralyzed for 34 years. Prior to his life changing accident, he was an outgoing and strong guy who wanted to join Marines after completing his High School. The incident happened right before his graduation. Anatoly and his brother went swimming. “I dove in, the next thing I saw was darkness, everywhere, when I opened my eyes, I saw my arms in front of me but for some reasons I couldn’t feel them. My brother rushed to help me, few minutes later I was on the way to the hospital," he recalls. It turned out that he dove into a shallow spot in the river, leaving him paralyzed. “For the first few months I thought that the doctors were wrong, but after a year, I realized that nothing is going to change.” In order to overcome his depression, a young man started to read a lot of books, mostly about religion : “Our body is just a shell for our soul. Who knows how it could end up if everything happened in a different way? I guess I’m in a place where I meant to be. In fact, I have many relatives, friends.. Yes, of course, I can’t work as others, can’t have own family, can’t use my legs and arms, but if you can’t change the situation, change your opinion toward it," says Anatoly. One day, instead of books his friends brought him a lot of paper and watercolors. Holding the paintbrush with his teeth Anatoly started to do his first brushstrokes. The new hobby became a new inspiration for Anatoly. As of today, Anatoly has his own fans. Anatoly paints a picture using teeth. In 2008, for his achievements and talents, Anatoly got accepted into International Organization for Talented and Disable People. In 2009, he released his own poem book in Belarusian language. With support of his friends, parents and fans, Anatoly started to feel himself as a normal human being, again. Today, some of Anatoly’s paintings located in a local museum.“He is a real man,” says one of employee from museum. “No matter what, he was able to survive. This person is a true role model!"
