Study: Immediately placed dental implants show excellent results

Feb. 25, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — When a dentist performs a dental implant procedure, they will usually extract the bad tooth and let the soft tissue around the area heal before placing an implant.

But a new study in the Journal of Periodontology shows that immediate placement of a dental implant and temporary crown right after extraction can have excellent short-term treatment outcomes for survival of the implant and have minimal changes in the aesthetic appearance of the gum line in the aesthetic zone, which is usually made up of a few front teeth and is the most visible area of the mouth.

In the study, the researchers assessed the condition of implant survival, gumline changes, aesthetic outcome and patient satisfaction after immediate placement.

The researchers analyzed a total of 985 implants in 979 patients. They found that the survival rate of immediately placed single tooth implants was 97 percent as 956 of the 985 implants survived.

“This study shows great promise for immediate dental implants,” said Dr. Greg Rubin, of the Calabasas Dental Institute.

“Placing a dental implant in the aesthetic zone is a very complex procedure because not only does there have to sufficient bone to support the implant, but the position of the implant has to fit to match the rest of the teeth.”

He adds the difficulty of the procedure is why many dentists usually let the area heal for several weeks to a couple of months before they insert the implant. They wait to allow all the bone to be replenished in the extraction site so they are better able to position the implant.
