West Sound Academy Teacher Plays on KJR's Bob Rivers Show with Chad Channing's 'Before Cars' Band

The band Before Cars played live on KJR's Bob Rivers Show on January 17, 2014. Band members include WSA music teacher Paul Burback and Chad Channing, a 2014 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, for his roll as drummer for Nirvana.

POULSBO, Wash. - Jan. 19, 2014 - PRLog -- West Sound Academy music teacher Paul Burback has been listening to the Bob Rivers Show, a long-time morning institution on Seattle radio, since he was in high school.  On Friday, January 17, 2014, Burback was able to tick another item off his lifetime bucket list:  a live appearance on the KJR morning drive-time program.  Burback plays guitar and bass and sings vocals for the band, Before Cars.  The group performed one of their songs, Walk Back, in the studio during the show and program host Rivers interviewed Before Cars lead guitarist and vocalist Chad Channing.  A multi-instrumentalist, Channing is the former drummer of the band Nirvana, most known for his work on the album Bleach as well as a number of other Nirvana compilations and live releases.   Channing's work in Nirvana has earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  The 29th Annual Induction Ceremony takes place on April 10, 2014 in Brooklyn, New York.

In addition to Channing and Burback, Before Cars has two other band members with ties to the school:  Andy Miller, a West Sound Academy parent, plays drums, percussion, and keyboard, and Justine Jeanotte, a music teacher for the afterschool Conservatory, plays violin and keyboard. The pop/rock band features Channing's original songs, an eclectic mix of styles ranging both lyrically and musically from quirky and light-hearted to deep and introspective.

With the help of close friends Burback and Miller, Channing recorded a single of Old Chair and 99 to Go, released on vinyl in 2006 by Flotation Records.  This led to making the full-length album Walk Back, recorded by Bleach producer Jack Endino, released on Flotation Records in 2009. Before Cars was featured on the BJ Shea Morning Experience on KISW, Seattleā€™s number one rock station, and in February 2010 band members went on a three country European tour in Poland, Germany, and The Netherlands.

Unlike the more straight ahead hard-rock-driven Walk Back release, the band has evolved to more of an acoustic guitar-based style on their latest album, How We Run, reflecting the direction the band has gone with their live performances.  The current set has more of an acoustic feel with violin on all songs, and light drums/percussion.

In his academic music life, Burback takes an 'immersion' approach to music classes at West Sound Academy:  General Music for Middle School, Music Ensemble elective for Upper School, and a very popular music class for Jan Term.  Students improve their music-reading and playing skills and learn to work with others as an ensemble.  Students present an eclectic mix of musical styles and genres in performances for the school community that are always very well received.

Burback's happy about the current attention to his 'afterschool' music life. Channing's role in Nirvana and the impending induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has the media looking at his current work in Before Cars.  Burback says, "We are all very excited!"
