As soon as you can, become a member of the BBB (Better Business Bureau).  You will not only be listed in all of the bureau’s online material and directories, but this designation has immediate impact on your credibility with customers.  For a new home business, this simple step is huge and can help build trust quickly. Usually this takes one year from the start of your business to apply and get accepted, but once accepted this is valuable label.

Once you start your business, then you need to develop a budget.  You cannot run a cost efficient business without a budget.  It is imperative that you incorporate a well devised budget into the planning process.  The budget should include what your expenses are and it should itemize them as well.  Make sure you are thorough and include everything possible item you can think of so you can prepare for future expenses.

If you home business involves selling items make sure your web page has the capability to host an e-store.  Customers like the convenience of being able to purchase items over the internet.  Many people like buying items over the internet without interacting with anyone.  Having an e-store also allows you to sell your product to people across the globe who may not have had the chance to order from you otherwise.

Make sure to figure out your tax deductions for your home-based business.  Defining your home office is the first plan of action.  You should designate a separate area or room of your home entirely for your business.  Once this has been identified make sure to use that space only for your business.  This makes deducting your home office much easier to compute, and you are much more likely to get, the largest write-offs possible if you have a set, defined space.  There are several other deductions you should determine early on in the process like; meals, travel and lodging.  Identifying and utilizing these deductions will help put more money back into your pocket.

Set up a post office box so you can appear professional to those individuals searching for you through the internet.  All business related mail should be sent to this P.O. Box.  You should not allow your home address to be placed on business cards or online for professionalism and safety.  Make sure your website’s domain name hosting site or registrar will keep your home address private, or list post office box address, for your family’s protection.  A popular choice for home-based business owners is obtaining a UPS post office box.

In addition to the P.O. Box, obtain an online phone service.  You can use a number forwarding service or get a business number.  Google also has a service called Google Voice which allows users to create a phone number and have the calls made to that created number forwarded to your mobile phone.  Using your home phone is not advised for home-based business owners for professional appearance and safety reasons.
