Nov. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- In the Safeguards publication195/2013(http://newsletter.sgs.com/eNewsletterPro/uploadedimages/000006/sgs-safeguards-19513-en71-1-revised-a4-en-13.pdf ) SGS informed about new toy acoustic requirements for the EU. The changes include testing of new toy categories where the sound level depends on the action of the child. Activated by a child means for instance; beating a drum or blowing on a flute.
In addition exposure times have been revised in order to better take into account the actual period children may be exposed to sound.

EU to Harmonize Toy Acoustic Requirements

Now amendment A2 to the EU toy standard EN 71-1 (physical and mechanical requirements) has been harmonized on 31 October 2013. A standard or amendment is harmonized after it has been published by the EU Commission in the EU Official Journal. (see official publication  OJEU C/2013 317/05 (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:C:2013:317:0005:0006:EN:PDF )). Only harmonized standards can be used to show compliance with the EU Toy Directive 2009/48/EC.

There is a transitional period until 30 September 2014. This means that until that date both the old and new requirements may be used to show compliance to the EU toy directive.

Amendment A2 is the first published amendment to EN 71-1:2011. Amendment A1 is still being processed. The amendment A1 concerns a revision of the warning section.
