NFPA Announces Two New ISO Standards Now Available

By: NFPA

MILWAUKEE - Nov. 11, 2013 - PRLog -- Two new ISO standards have recently been published and are now available from the National Fluid Power Association (NFPA).

ISO 6358-1:2013, Pneumatic fluid power — Determination of flow-rate characteristics of components using compressible fluids — Part 1: General rules and test methods for steady-state flow

This part of ISO 6358, which supersedes ISO 6358:1989, specifies a steady-state method for testing pneumatic fluid power components that use compressible fluids, i.e. gases, and that have internal flow paths that can be either fixed or variable in size, to determine their flow-rate characteristics. It does not apply to components whose flow coefficient is unstable during use, i.e. components that exhibit remarkable hysteretic behavior (because they can contain flexible parts that deform under the flow) or that have an internal feedback phenomenon (such as regulators), or to components that exchange energy with the fluid during flow-rate measurement, e.g. cylinders, accumulators, etc.

This part of ISO 6358 specifies requirements for the test installation, the test procedure, and the presentation of results, and includes several test procedures, including the one described in Annex A, which is from ISO 6358:1989.

Benefits: ISO 6358-1 will help 1) a manufacturer determine characteristics for publication in a catalog, and 2) a system designer understand what the characteristics mean in order to compare pneumatic valves from various suppliers.  The standard provides information superior to the traditional CV values.

ISO 11170:2013, Hydraulic fluid power — Sequence of tests for verifying performance characteristics of filter element

This International Standard, which supersedes ISO 11170:2003, defines a sequence of tests for verifying the hydraulic, mechanical and separation characteristics of hydraulic filter elements.

It is not intended to qualify a filter for a particular duty or replicate conditions of service, which can only be done by a specific test protocol developed for the purpose, including actual conditions of use (e.g. the operating fluid). However, the procedure in ISO 11170 is applicable to individual fluids or types of fluids that have similar chemistry.

Benefits: ISO 11170 provides filter users with an industry-accepted test sequence for using a group of three filters for more than one test to verify that the product meets the manufacturer’s specification.

NFPA provides a forum for the fluid power industry’s channel partners—manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, customers and educators. Its U.S. and multinational members work cooperatively in advancing hydraulic and pneumatic technology through the association’s many programs and initiatives. NFPA coordinates standards development for fluid power at the industry and international levels. These standards are intended as guides to aid the manufacturer, the consumer, and the user.
