Au printemps 1822, Percy et sa deuxième épouse, Mary Woolstonecroft, l'auteur du roman célèbre Frankenstein, accompagné par sa demi-sœur, Claire, ont loué une villa sur la côte Toscane. Ils furent rejoints par Jane et Edward Williams, et plus tard par l'aventurier cornouaillais Edward Trelawny.

Les rapports entre Mary et son mari se sont dégradés après la mort précoce de deux de leurs trois enfants. Percy partageait son affection avec les deux sœurs, ce qui créait une tension considérable, si on ajoute le penchant général du poète pour les jolies femmes.
