Temple Beth El Commemorates 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Oct. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- Temple Beth El, Boca Raton, Florida will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht (the night of broken glass) on November 10, 2013 at 3:00 pm (admission $5).  The Temple has partnered with the SS St Louis Legacy Project Foundation and NEXT GENERATION sponsorship to present "The Voyage of the SS ST. Louis" program which includes the play, The Trial of Franklin D. Roosevelt, a play written by Robert Krakow.  This acclaimed play was last performed at the United States Department of State in September 2012 where surviving passengers of the infamous ship, the SS St. Louis, were honored by the Department of State  The play is a mock trial during which the legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Jews is explored.  Temple Beth El is pleased to announce that Herbert Karliner, the leader of the SS St. Louis survivor group and a Board member of the SS St Louis Legacy Project Foundation, will be in attenance at the November 10 event and will discuss his experiences.  During a recent interview Karliner was asked about his recollection of Kristallnacht. "My father, mother, brother, two sisters and I were living in a small town in Germany, Peiskretcham, and were frightened after Kristallnacht.  My father owned a general store which was ransacked that night in November 1938.  Windows were broken, barels of pickles, herring, and flour were overturned.  My father tried to save the Torahs and prayer books the Nazis were burning at our synagogue.  The Gestapo kicked him away, arrested him and took him to Buchenwald Concentration Camp.  We knew we had to leave."  Temple Beth El invites the public to attend this important event and honor the memory of those who persecuted on that night of terrorism in Germany in 1938.  Contact www.tbeboca.org or call (561) 391-8900 to purchase tickets.
