"Poets from a War Torn World" Now Available for Kindle, Nook, iPad and other e-ReadersAviva Butt's Middle Eastern Poetry Brings Together Different Cultures
The internationally known Arabic scholar, Professor Reuven Snir of Haifa University, wrote the introduction to the book in clear, simple language that gives background information to assist those who have no previous knowledge of Arabic or Hebrew poetry. The book will interest scholars, students, and readers interested in poetry, poetics, or diverse cultures. The essays, which are on the emergence of both modern Arabic and modern Hebrew poetry, are presented in the context of a struggling Middle East. Certainly one way to bridge cultures is to introduce art – which opens doorways to understanding! About the Author: Raised in New York City, Aviva Butt has lived all over the world and currently resides in Dunedin, New Zealand. The material on the Hebrew poets, and to some extent on Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, was based on study and research done in the 1980s while enrolled at the University of Sydney and on her six-month stay in Israel on a Commonwealth Postgraduate Research scholarship. The author lived and worked in Israel for 3-1/2 years during the 1967 Arab-Israeli conflict, which motivated her personal desire for peace. She had the opportunity then not only to experience the hardships within Israel, but was invited to visit the family of the head of the Shawwa family on the Gaza Strip. This book was not published 30 years ago, due to the disapproval it would have engendered at that time.
