Specific Exercises Boost Brain Power

Where it was once thought that mental exercises such as crossword puzzles and mentally stimulating exercises were the only brain enhancing techniques, neuroscientists now know otherwise.

Sept. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Scientists once thought the brain developed until a certain young age and then became rigid.  Neuroscientists now know that the brain has neuroplasticity, that is, there is the capacity of the brain to continue changing in response to new information at any point in one’s life. The brain can continue to adjust itself throughout life, to cope with injury or disease, or to adjust to new situations.

In a study of neuroplasticity published in The Journal of Neuroscienceresearchers from the University of Hamburg in Germany found that instructing senior citizens in a new skill led to both structural as well as functional changes in the brain.

A licensed rehab clinician and star of Functional Fitness on PBS, Suzanne Andrews designed the Brain Power DVD that emphasizes physical therapy movements to increase the fluidity between the right and left side of the body for increased adaptability of the left and right sides of the brain.

In normal memory loss, we all may forget our keys, but in a disease like Alzheimer's, a person forgets what the keys are for. We all forget what we went into a room for, but in Alzheimer's, the person forgets the room entirely. To forget an appointment is normal, but we would usually remember when reminded. The person with Alzheimer's does not “remember they forgot.” If you or a family member shows signs of this more serious forgetting, it requires medical intervention. Memory loss from Alzheimer's or severe dementia will not respond as readily as stress-related memory loss.

The brain does this through repetitive motions at the right time and with the right amount of stimulation. Doctors and rehab specialists study how to intervene at the best moments to create ideal situations to stimulate cross-learning between the two sides of the brain. A simple example of this is a case where a paralyzed patient was able to use a harness and support to walk a treadmill, and this repetitive motion stimulated the opposite hemisphere of his brain to learn the functions needed to walk on his own.

Rehab Therapy Professionals utilize exercises that work both the right and left brain to increase memory and concentration. These principles increase brain power by physically exercising the right and left sides of your body to stimulate both sides of your brain. The right brain is responsible for visual processing, intuitive thinking, and getting the “big picture,” and the left brain is the side that is analytical, verbal, and linear.  With experts tips and therapeutic exercise,  Suzanne Andrews Brain Power DVD helps to stimulate neurons that link these functions together to aid the brain in becoming more alert and balanced.
