NEW YORK - Sept. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- The effects of the Great Recession are still being felt and Congress continues to battle over the budget, leading to sequesters and shutdowns. This has the many private, nonprofit organizations that rely on the financial assistance from the government finding it difficult to provide the social services they have provided for decades. It is during times like these that makes this story all the more special.  An anonymous donation of loose diamonds was made to a local orphanage, helping it stay afloat and continue to do the work they have done for over eighty-five years.

“It was a blessing, pure and simple as that.” Said Sister Mary Elizabeth. “We have no idea who this angel is, but we thank him every day in our prayers.”

The orphanage is one of a handful left across the country that houses children with special needs. For decades, there were hundreds of such places, run by nuns and funded by the church as well as private donations, but as money got tighter and the donations trickled off, many were forced to either ask for government assistance or close the doors.

“We didn't think that we had more than six months left ourselves, even after selling some of our own historical religious jewelry.” the soft-spoken nun commented, “Now, we have the money we need both for repairs to our facility as well as to rebuild our endowment.”

The tale began when a lawyer visited the orphanage with a letter, a satchel and a security guard. Giving what little information he was allowed, he told the nuns that a will belonging to a recently deceased client mentioned the orphanage.  He then handed the satchel over to the sisters. When the anxious nuns looked inside and saw that the case was filled with loose diamonds, they asked him how to explain. The attorney told them that he had said all he could. When the overjoyed sisters met with the diamond appraisers at The Diamond Supplier, they were shocked to find the value of the donation was over $200,000!
